FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Moratorium Policies – What it is
Samples of Coverage Under Moratorium Policy
September 5, 2009 — Upon your search for a private health insurance policy, you have probably run across what is known as a moratorium policy.
So what is a moratorium policy? It is the amount of time that must pass before you will be covered for a pre-existing illness. Under the terms of a moratorium policy, you will not be asked for specifics about your medical history, but any illnesses that you already have had for a determined amount of time will not be covered until you have a had your policy for a number of years. This process is made so you can file claims and have them determined by your medical history and not by the procedure you are about to undergo. This is supposed to simplify your claim process.
If you have a moratorium policy, it is a possibility that the illness you had previously will never be covered under this plan, but your medical insurance would be to cover new illnesses that would happen.
Below are samples that will help you in understanding the process of a moratorium policy.
1. Mrs. Smith, 45 years of age, had an ovary removal done two years ago and now wants to get a health insurance policy. Since she had her surgery, Mrs. Smith has had no follow-ups with her gynecologist, nor been to see her general practitioner an advice relating to her ovaries, nor had any complications that are associated with the previous problem. When she gets her policy, anything associated with ovarian issues will not be covered for the first two years of the policy period.
2. Mr. Brown, 55 years of age, had bowel cancer and received treatment four years ago but has to go to a follow-up specialist every 6 years to be checked to make sure the cancer has not returned. His last appointment was one month prior to becoming a policy holder. When he gets her policy, anything associated with bowel cancer for the first two years will not be covered under the policy.
3. Mr. Taylor, 67 years of age, has high BP and heightened cholesterol. He is one prescriptions for both problems and this helps to control both levels. This is an illness that will never be cured and will always require medication to control his issues. It is highly unlikely that Mr. Taylor will ever receive coverage on these illnesses under his new policy.
